My Soul to Steal by Rachel Vincent

My Soul to Steal (Soul Screamers Book 4)
By Rachel Vincent
To be released January 1, 2011
Harlequin, 352 pages

Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can't just pretend nothing happened. But "complicated" doesn't even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.
See, Sabine isn't just an ordinary girl. She's a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people's fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives.
And Sabine isn't above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.

— description

Oh, Kaylee. I root for this main character SO HARD.

She's surrounded by death all the time, does this awful screamy thing when people die, keeps getting sucked into the underworld and is lied to repeatedly by her user boyfriend. And now Nash's also-supernatural ex is in town and haunting Kaylee's dreams? Girl can't catch a break!

This ex, Sabine, has it out for Kaylee. She's vicious, which was painful to sit through as a reader. You just wanted to reach into the book and yell "BACK OFF!" And maybe slap her a little.

But I like how Kaylee handles herself. She guards her heart, doesn't automatically leap back into Nash's arms after he betrays her and gives herself time to sort out her own feelings.

I'm so torn: Should she forgive Nash? Or move on? I sort of enjoy how Rachel Vincent keeps me waffling back and forth. I can see how it will frustrate some, but I usually pick a "team" and stay there, so it's refreshing to me.

Also, let's discuss Tod. This character really evolved in this book in his support for Kaylee. I'm intrigued, and can't wait to read the novella Reaper, which came out December 1, to get more of his backstory.

Rachel Vincent knows how to keep her readers anticipating more in this fast-paced, supernatural series. I mistakenly thought this was the final book and was a bit bummed to be left hanging with a "Stay tuned for the next book, If I Die" note on the last page. But that just means I'm invested! I'm still enjoying this series four books in, so bring on book 5! Looks like that one will be out in 2011.

Check out my review of book 3, My Soul to Keep.

Special thanks to Harlequin and NetGalley for sending me my copy of this book.
